My caption was:
Werewolves, in our modern time, live in secret in a human-dominated world, either hiding from them or hiding as them. Once, werewolves lived easily without human interruption, protecting their territories more from other packs and predators than from human encroachment. As civilization pushed forward some assimilated to the hybrid life, later making their way to the frontier, while others took to colonizing and exploration in hopes of regaining territory with the ability to re-establish pack life there. Werewolves who defended their territory, still living exclusively in the wilderness, have become specialized to extreme environments, which is now some of their only and safest territory left.
